The Jonathan D. Hale Collection, 1863-1885, contains correspondence, printed materials, and handwritten notes related to the life of Hale, a Union scout and postmaster of Hale's Mill, Tenn.

This collection consists of a letter from Captain Joseph A. Anthony of the 7th Tennessee Infantry to his mother written on June 6, 1861, from camp Trousdale, Tennessee.

This collection contains two letters written on one sheet of paper. The first, from Martha Stewart to her husband Joseph (dated November 30, 1864) details the daily happenings in Franklin Square, Ohio. The second, from hospitalized Joseph in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to his wife and children (dated December 24-25, 1864) discusses the Battle of Nashville.

The Boyd Letters, 1862-1864, contains six letters written by Joseph E. Boyd of the 115th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Specifically, this correspondence describes Union military camp conditions, the environment of Tennessee, Union soldiers' viewpoints regarding the war and Confederates, battles and military operations in Middle and East Tennessee, and the family concerns of Union soldiers.

This collection contains the official and personal documents of Joseph C. Read through his Union Army military career in the Civil War and subsequent retirement in Fernandina, Florida. Read, during the war, rose from the rank of Sergeant to Brevet Colonel, supplied General Sherman’s siege of Atlanta, as well as partook in many of the major battles in the South during the Civil War.

This document is a quartermaster claim by Joseph W. Gibson for the acquisition by Col. Horatio G. Gibson (Union) of one horse for the 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery Battery. The claim is dated the third of June, 1868 in McMinn County, Tennessee.

This collection houses a diary documenting Josiah Reed's service in the Civil War, a letter requesting an additional bounty for his service, and a sermon that was delivered at his burial.

This collection contains the diary/scrapbook of Julius E. Thomas, a soldier with Company F of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry (Union) during the Civil War. The diary entries span from June 1, 1863 through August 4, 1864, and describe Thomas' day-to-day activities as well as his travels thoughout the state of Tennessee. In the entries from early 1864, he describes his movements in East Tennessee, mentioning Strawberry Plains, Morristown, Sevierville, and Dandridge.

This collection contains the diary and daybook of Julius E. Thomas, 2nd Sergeant and Chief Bugler of Company F, 1st Tennessee Cavalry (Union). Entries range from August 5, 1864 through April 5, 1865. Thomas writes about the movement of his company throughout Tennessee. Part of the book contains notations of supplies used for construction.

In this letter, Mathews tells his wife of his homesickness and of how the war changes a soldier's thoughts and behaviors.

This collection houses three orders and one letter concerning the operations of the 69th Ohio Infantry during 1862.

This letter from an unknown author to her sister, Bettie Bruner, describes the author's life in Clear Creek, Tennessee during the Civil War. It relates news of the family and mentions several military events.

This collection consists of two service records from the Adjutant General's Office in Nashville, Tennessee for Logan Goodpasture, dated November 22, 1894. They confirm that he served with Company F of the 13th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers during the Civil War.

A single handwritten letter by Confederate soldier M. D. Wilson stationed at Cumberland Gap, TN on August 4, 1863.

M. H. Owen wrote this letter to his sister from Fort Pillow on March 22, 1862. In it, he describes his trip from Columbus, Kentucky to Fort Pillow and mentions the other regiments stationed there with him.

M. S. Charles began keeping this diary in 1863. In it, he describes battalion training and events that took place around Clarksville, Tennessee. Also included are half of a military pass, a scrap of paper reading Mr Littleton, and a poem clipped from an unidentified newspaper.

A four-page handwritten letter, signed "MR" by Lieutenant Marcus Richardson, sent to Captain Joseph Washington Anderson. Written from Cumberland Gap, Tenn., the letter details the reconnaissance and skirmish that took place at Cumberland Gap in the days prior under the command of Major General Edmund Kirby Smith. The letter is dated March 23, 1862.
